A High-Accuracy Absolute Navigational System for Rapid Runway Repairers

In this project we implemented and demonstrated a set of vision-based guidance methods for a runway repairer. The algorithms replace the normal INS with video-based ground tracking augmented by tracking of map-located features visible on the horizon. The map referencing system operates in conjunction with the GPS. The system involves developing new capabilities that will support more accurate location determination than is now possible with GPS/INS combinations alone and at considerably lower cost.
