A Generalized Video Compression Model
This project developed a set of video data compression methods that exploit knowledge of how the human visual cortex operates to reduce video transmission bandwidth over current methods. Using current conventional data compression techniques, single channel video can be compressed on the order of 100 times (i.e. reducing the bandwidth from nominally 10 Mhz to 100Khz). To fit in the bandwidth provided by a SINCGARS radio further compression of at least 5-6 is required. This project sought to use knowledge of how people really do shape and object recognition to get the additional reduction without significant image degradation.
